Round Rock (November 12, 2011) – After winning the 5A Cross Country Championship and standing atop the medal stand in the top slot, the runners jumped in the Old Settler’s Park pond to celebrate -- finishing the season with a splash!

Last year, when the boy’s finished second and the girl’s finished third at the state meet, they made a pact that they would do whatever it took to win it all in 2011. And they didn’t waver from the plan. The tradition continues! In true Southlake style and for the first time in Southlake history, both girls and boys teams came away with Gold at the State 5A meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. A clean sweep.

When asked about the wins, Southlake Cross Country Head Coach Justin Leonard said “I told my runners, ‘Today is our day we will not disappoint. People came to see if we were for real. And we are. Race every step.’” Added Leonard, “We left everything on that course and came away with gold. I am proud of each and every one of them. They gave it their all throughout the season.”

With a team score of 34, the Lady Dragons topped Humble Kingwood who finished in second with 48 points and Lewisville Flower Mound in third with 104 points. Courtney Kreigshauser edged out Woodlands’ Maddie McLellan with a second place finish and time of 11:23:50, McLellan finished in 11:23:70 to take third. In first with a time of 11:12 Karis Jachen from College Station A&M. Southlake Lady Dragons took three of the top ten spots. Shelby Chapin took sixth with a time of 11:29 and Felice Johnson took seventh with a time of 11:31.

The Dragon Boys won gold with five runners in the top ten and set a 5A boys state record with a final score of 20 points. Second place finisher Houston Strake Jesuit tallied 110 points and College Park took third with 122 points. Nate Sullivan, Ben Golestan, Joe Sansone, Trevor Gilley and Jordan Chavez finished 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th.
