Vishnu, 13th century, India, Chola period (c. 850-1310), bronze. Kimbell Art Museum, Fort WorthFORT WORTH—Jennifer Casler Price, curator for Asian and non-Western art at the Kimbell Art Museum, will present a lecture entitled “Lovers and Warriors: Hindu Gods and the Temples of South India” as part of the Museum’s “Art in Context” series, on Wednesday, February 22, at 12:30 p.m., in the Museum auditorium. Admission is free. In this lecture, Price will discuss the basic tenets of the Hindu religion, explore the role of its primary deities, examine their iconographic features in Hindu art, and illustrate their function in the splendid Hindu temples in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is home to a succession of three great dynasties: the Pallavas (4th–8th centuries), the Cholas (8th–13th centuries), and the Vijayanagar empire (14th–17th centuries). Their incredible artistic legacy is represented in the devotional sculpture they created and in the impressive temples they erected that still function today. The lecture will feature images of temples from Price’s recent travels to south India. Price is the organizing curator of “The Kimbell at 40: An Evolving Masterpiece,” which opens October 7, 2012. Since joining the Kimbell staff in 1993, she has organized exhibitions of Asian and non-Western art, including “Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea” (2010), and has also led several members’ tours to China, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, and India.
