This vibrant beauty thrives in the hot, dry Texas climate
In Bloom: April–August
Vivid reds, oranges and yellows come together in this beautiful pinwheel-shaped flower. But don’t let its good looks fool you: The hardy plant thrives in the hot, dry Texas climate. Maybe that’s why they’re also called fire-wheels.
Flower Fact: Lady Bird Johnson was a longtime environmental activist and journalism student at the University of Texas at Austin. Along with actress Helen Hayes, the two founded the National Wildflower Research Center on the campus of Lady Bird’s alma mater in 1982. Named in her honor, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center continues introduce generations to the beauty of wildflowers.
