Southlake Carroll Dragons Off to a Fast Start at Greenhill Six Mile Cross Country Relay
Submitted by Lori Palmer
The Southlake Carroll cross-country team’s training paid off at the Greenhill Six Mile Relay to start the season. The relay race has been a mainstay on the Texas high school cross-country schedule for years and marks the start of the season for many teams. Showing great depth, the Southlake Carroll cross-country team took four first-place finishes.
“The teams performed well for their 2013 season opener, “ said Coach Justin Leonard. “We are excited about the direction we are headed, but we also realize how much work lies in front of us to reach our ultimate goal.”
The Carroll Boys Elite Varsity team broke the course record, previously held by the 2011 Carroll team. The relay team of Connor Hendrickson, Jacob Pickle, Eli Canal and Johnny Kemps set the record with a time of 29:47. This first-place finish gives the boys’ team the honor of wearing the coveted yellow jersey in next year’s race. Highland Park followed with 2nd place; Flower Mound took 3rd; Northwest placed 5th; Coppell finished 6th; and Carroll’s Varsity team placed 7th with runners Brent Aydon, Eric Karl, Luke Lanham and Kyle Polansky.
The Carroll Girls Elite Varsity team grabbed 2nd place with a team of Katie Burnham, Sam Young, Tig Archer and Kayli Jones. Flower Mound took 1st; Highland Park placed 3rd; Northwest was 4th; and Carroll’s Varsity took 7th place with Haley McFadden, Sarah Odneal, Izzy Dominquez and Moriah Dadson.
The Southlake Carroll JV-A Boys took 1st and 3rd place in their division with the first-place team of Eric Vetere, Ansel Richards, Timou Toure and Joseph Zapiniski. The JV-A Girls team who took 1st included Kate Brekken, Ari Lopez, Rianna Randolph and Madison Schumm. The other JV-A Girls team had a 3rd place finish.
Southlake Carroll cross-country had 32 teams participate in the Greenhill Six Mile Cross Country Relay. Next week, the team travels to Denton for the Marcus I Invitational.
