The Carroll Dragon girls and boys cross-country teams took 1st place at the Texas 5A state meet on Saturday. “Believe” was the Dragon motto this cross-country season as there were many new faces on both girls and boys varsity teams. It began at the Greenhill relays in August and finished with the championship trophies on Saturday. The top 12 teams in Texas made the journey to Round Rock to compete.
The course was reconfigured due to the heavy rain in the area last week. The sun was shining, and the new course brought more sharp turns and hills this year. The Dragon teams believed in their training and their teammates and achieved their common goal.
"I'm so proud of the kids and the way they ran to clench the 3-peat,” said Coach Justin Leonard. “This truly was a program win for us. The kids bought in, set big goals and went to work in achieving them. This senior class left its mark on the program just like the ones before them, and we are grateful for that.” Leonard’s favorite quote is "he who runs with the past never runs alone.”
The Lady Dragons scored 110 team points with one top-10 finish, Tig Archer at 5th. Sam Young came in 17th, senior Katie Burnham was on her heels with 18th place, Moriah Dadson finished at 35th, and the final scoring position was Haley McFadden at 81st. Freshman Ari Lopez, placing 87th, and Sophomore Kayli Jones, placing 89th, will be back next year to represent the Lady Dragons.
The Carroll boys scored 80 team points with two runners in the top 10. Senior Jacob Pickle was runner-up and silver medalist, and Connor Hendrickson — with his third appearance at the state meet — was 5th. Juniors Eli Canal, Johnny Kemps and Ansel Richards placed 15th, 43rd and 60th, respectively. Senior Brent Aydon followed with 66th and junior Luke Lanham at 69th to complete the varsity team.
