The 2014 Sochi Winter Games have been everything from boring. Whether you’re a fan of figure skating, escaping bathroom lock ins or victorious underdogs, there’s something for everyone.

The greatest thing about the Olympics – both summer and winter – is it gives Americans the chance to show their support for their country.

However, showing your pride for the red, white and blue becomes a lot more personal when you can cheer on individuals from your own backyard.

This year, there are roughly eight Olympians competing in the 2014 Sochi games from Texas. Out of these eight Olympians, three are from North Texas.

The renowned bobsledder Johnny Quinn went viral during this year’s games when he posted on Twitter about busting his way through the Sochi bathroom door.

McKinney’s own Quinn is a former professional football wide receiver, playing for NFL teams such as the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. As a University of North Texas alumnus, Quinn was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame in 2011.

Speedskater Jordan Malone is a returning Olympian, earning bronze in the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Dentonite was crowned the fastest man in the world in 2003, winning the Senior World Championships.

Additionally, several Dallas Stars team members are competing in Sochi, but not for Team USA.

Interesting enough, Jamie Benn will play for Canada, Kari Lehtonen will play for Finland, Valeri Nichushkin will play for Russia and Stars coach Lindy Ruff will be an associate coach for Canada’s team.

While he’s no longer an all-star athlete, Grapevine’s own Lewis Johnson is in attendance at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. The former track star turned bobsled, luge and skeleton reporter will serve his eighth Olympics for NBC Sports.

Most recently, at the 2012 London Olympics, Johnson was the marathon reporter and also served as a track and field reporter at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Johnson is married to French artist Dominque Galleron who owns A Touch of Paris Gallery in Grapevine.

Be sure to look out for Johnson’s coverage as he is said to be holding up a sign that shows his love for Grapevine. Follow him on Twitter @LewisJohnsonMG.
