Turning your passion into a business is a feat only few accomplish, and Steve and Alexis Schulze are certainly among those few. Avid juicers with a great enthusiasm for healthy living, the California couple opened their first Nékter Juice Bar in Costa Mesa in 2011. Within days, the line was continually wrapped around the block, and the Schulzes knew they had created something special. The successful franchise now operates 21 other California locations, including Laguna Beach, Santa Monica and Irvine, in addition to two Arizona stores and one in Dallas’ Snider Plaza. This past March, Nékter opened in Southlake, and it’s quickly gained a health-conscious following.
The best thing about Nékter is its healthy menu. All juices, smoothies and Açaí bowls are made from 100 percent organic, vegan ingredients sourced in Texas and California. All recipes originated in Alexis Schulze’s kitchen.
“I used my friends and family as guinea pigs,” she says. “Even my kids helped me make the Orange Crush! It was fun but very messy. As for the names — that was actually the difficult part. I'm a little silly, so they have a little of that personality in there.”
According to Jim Ballard, vice president of the Texas region and Steve Schulze’s brother-in-law, the most popular smoothie is the Pink Flamingo. A combination of pitaya, pineapple, strawberries, coconut water and a splash of agave, the drink transforms into the most vibrant magenta hue when blended on ice. Another customer favorite is the Chocolate Dream smoothie, a delicious mix of house-made cashew nut milk, cacao, carob, dates, avocado and a dash of agave. Juices like the signature Greenie (parsley, spinach, kale, celery, cucumber, lemon and apple) and the Toxin Flush (parsley, spinach, apples, lemon and ginger) are packed with nutrient-rich vegetables that help rid the body of toxins. To prepare the drinks, the 14-person Southlake staff blends the veggies and other nutritious ingredients in top-of-the-line Zumex juicers, which are manufactured in Spain and valued at $2,500 apiece.
Nékter also carries two cleanses, classic and advanced, which are offered in one-, two-, three- and five-day packages. Designed to allow the body to re-set, the classic cleanse consists of six drinks with individual benefits like detoxifying antibodies and clearing toxins from the colon. The advanced is for the, well, more advanced juicer who’s not afraid of a more leafy taste. It also consists of six drinks that help purify, energize and deliver essential vitamins and nutrients to the body. After a well-attended grand opening celebration on June 20, Nékter is poised to become one of Southlake’s most popular summer hangouts.
