Southlake Carroll coach Todd Dodge celebrates with his son, Riley Dodge, left, after Southlake Carroll defeated Austin Westlake 43-29 to finish the season 16-0.
Here is a blast from the past as we gear up for the Dragon's 2014 home opener vs former head coach Todd Dodge and the Austin Westlake Chapparals set for August 29.
Back in 2006, the two teams met in the 5A State Title game at the Alamodome with Dodge as the Dragon's head coach. It would become Dodge's 98th and final win in Dragon Green.
“That was a great game,” Dodge says smiling. “The one where Tre went nuts,” referring to Tre Newton’s 74-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Dragon fans will recall the junior tailback breaking nine tackles before scoring and breaking a third quarter tie putting the Dragon’s ahead 29-22.
Newton’s touchdown was key, however, many feel the game’s biggest play occurred later with seven minutes left and the score tied at 29. The play featured Dodge’s son Riley tossing up a 30-yard touchdown strike to Anthony Ford.
“I don’t think Riley will ever live that one down,” Dodge said with a laugh.
