Every year, Business Insider ranks the best suburbs to live in the United States, and this year is no different - the Midwest takes an overwhelming majority of the list. Southlake, however, ranked very high, despite the odds, placing 17th out of 50 suburbs nationally ranked. This is the first year Southlake made the list.
"After examining data on 2,754 municipalities across the country, we put together a list of America's 50 best suburbs," the article says. "We considered suburbs with populations between 5,000 and 100,000 within 40 kilometers of the nearest metropolitan area. We also factored in average commute times, median household income, poverty and crime rates, public-school ratings from GreatSchools.org, and a measure of housing affordability."
Business Insider reported the likelihood of the Midwest's success comes from the reasonable cost of living and other factors. Southlake was praised for its active nature.
"Southlake Town Square is full of shopping and dining options, the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve offers a look at the Cross Timbers ecosystem, and there are plenty of parks and recreational facilities for children of all ages. The median household income is $172,951."
The population was listed at 27,600 and the "Great Schools" score was a 9. According to its website, "GreatSchools is a non-profit organization with profiles of more than 200,000 preK-12 schools – public, public charter and private – and over one million reviews from parents, teachers and students sharing information about the schools they know best. We also have thousands of articles, worksheets, and videos to help parents encourage and support learning at home. Our new personalized education guide, GreatKids, helps parents see how their children are doing, support their learning, and find great education resources." Ratings are based on test results.
Southlake was beaten by three other Texas towns: Bellaire at 10, Highland Park at 7, and University Park at 4. Other Texas suburbs on the list include:
