The Carroll Girls and Boys Cross Country teams advanced to the State Championship race after qualifying at the Class 6A Region I Meet in Lubbock on Monday. For the fifth consecutive year, the boy’s team captured first place and a state meet bid, and for the 19th consecutive year, the Lady Dragons earned a spot in the championship state race. The three-mile course at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock is a tough one and known for its steep hills and tight turns but the Dragon runners rose to the occasion.

Head coach Justin Leonard said in a press release, “We are pleased with our performances today at the Region I-6A meet. Our goal for the regional meet is to advance and be ready to run our best race at the state meet and I believe we have achieved that. Reed Brown and Alison Esparza had great individual performances. It’s an accomplishment for the boys to win five regional titles in a row and for the girls to qualify for the state meet 19 years in a row.”

In a field of 182 runners, the Carroll boys had all scoring runners finish in the top 25. Reed Brown took second place, Charlie Gardner came in 17th, Michael Simcho 23rd, Michael Waugh 24th and Nicolas Fernandes finishes out the scoring positions in 25th place. Timou Toure (37th) and Shea Whatley (75th) also competed. The Dragon boys team scored 72 points, Flower Mound 151, Keller Central 155 and El Paso Eastwood 176 and all will advance to the Championship State Meet.

The Lady Dragons competed in a very close and tough field. They had three runners finish in the top 20: Alison Esparza (13th), Kayli Jones (16th) and Gillian Mortimer (18th). Close behind were Cate Tract in 21st place and Tig Archer in 23rd to complete the scoring runners. Olivia Arriaza (26th) and Sarah Odneal (28th) also competed. The Lady Dragons scored just 86 points to come in third place.  Also moving on to the state meet was first place Marcus (78 points), second place Keller (78 points) and fourth place Lewisville Hebron (92 points).
