Maybe it was the looming spooky holiday or the inclement weather that made this game a strange one, or it could have been that it was moved up to Thursday. Whatever the case, the Dragons took the field on Thursday night and completely shut out Haltom, 59-0, in a game where two Carroll quarterbacks threw for a total of 8 touchdowns and an 80 percent completion rate.
Mason Holmes took a bulk of the touchdowns, throwing for 6 and racking up 271 passing yards. Montana Murphy added the other 2 touchdowns and 167 yards in the air. He also rushed for 8 yards.
Senior wide receiver and Dragon Pride Player of the Week Blake Berwick impressed with his two receptions going for 121 yards, both touchdowns. Ten Carroll receivers totaled for 438 yards; six of which scored at least once. Alex Simpson led the backfield with his 64 rushing yards. He got a bulk of the carries with 14 attempts.
The defensive effort was also impressive. The unit held the opposing team to 22 yards on the ground and 98 yards in the air. Sherod Coleman topped the list in tackles with 10, including 1 for a loss. Grant McFarlin followed with 9 tackles and 3 for a loss.
Ryan Thompson registered the unit's only sack on the night and added 6 tackles. Meanwhile, Barrett Buck and Robert Barnes took the team's pair of interceptions and combined for 5 tackles and a pass deflection. Gavin Arison caused and recovered a fumble, as well.
The Dragons are now 7-2 (4-1 in the district). Up next is (2-8) L.D. Bell on Friday at 7:30 on the home field.
