The Southlake Carroll Boys and Girls Cross Country teams earned second place finishes at the Class 6A State Championship in Round Rock, Texas, over the weekend. Despite rain, wind and mud making the already difficult course at Old Settler’s Park even more challenging, both the boys and the girls came away with a podium finish.

Head Cross Country Coach Justin Leonard said in a press release, “Our boys and girls ran as hard as they possibly could today and came up a little short of our goal. Even though we didn’t reach our goal, I’m still proud of the way they competed and their strong finish to the season. Our goal is to work hard and aim high and we will regroup and get ready to come back next season and leave it all on the course again. I would like to thank our seniors for the leadership and dedication to the program over the past four years.”

After earning four consecutive state championships, the Dragon boys came away with second this year, just behind The Woodlands. Junior Reed Brown came in fourth overall, junior Charlie Gardner finished next for the Dragons in 29th place.  Nicholas Fernandes was the next scoring Dragon, coming in 31st place followed by Timou Toure grabbing 44th and Shea Whatley taking 58th to finish out the scoring positions. Michael Waugh came in 66th place and Michael Simcho took 78th, completing the varsity team.

The Lady Dragons came in second place just behind Marcus by only nine points. Their team was led by senior Kayli Jones who took 12th place, followed by Cate Tracht grabbing 25th, Allison Esparza came in 28th, Gillian Mortimer was 30th and Tig Archer was 32nd, finishing out the scoring positions. Sarah Odneal was 45th and Olivia Arriaza came in 60th, to complete the varsity team.
