Last Saturday, Dragon athletes from Carroll Middle School (CMS) hit the basketball court not to compete, but to assist. The CMS 7th grade basketball teams boarded a bus for the University of Texas at Arlington to volunteer for a Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) basketball tournament.

Basketball is SOTX’s third most popular sport, with more than 9,000 SOTX athletes in the state. At last weekend’s event, more than 150 SOTX athletes competed. Under the guidance of CMS coaches Anthony Van Buskirk and Zach Sellers, the CMS Dragons helped cheer, officiate and work the scorer’s table.

“This was a great opportunity for our basketball teams to serve,” says Coach Sellers, who organized the event. “All the athletes had a blast. It was an enriching experience for all.”

SOTX is a nonprofit with a mission to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Visit SOTX.org to learn more.
