Southlake Carroll Cross Country

Season Recap

What a year it’s been for the Southlake Carroll Cross Country team. Known nationally as one of the top Cross Country programs in all of high school, the Dragons put together yet another dominant season. The boys celebrated many first-place finishes throughout the season, winning both the District and Regional Championships en route to taking second at the very rainy, very muddy State Championship meet. Following their second-place finish at Round Rock, Justin Leonard’s Cross Country team finished second at the Nike Cross Regionals, qualifying for the prestigious Nike Cross Nationals year-end meet in Portland, Oregon, where they finished in 16th place with a total team score of 344.

The Carroll girl’s team fought hard and also enjoyed many successes this season, beating many tough competitors on their way to another dominant season. Taking top honors at the District meet and qualifying for the State Championship Meet, the Lady Dragons finished in second place, missing out on a state title by just nine points. After wining the Nike Cross Regionals, earning them a spot to compete in the National meet in Oregon, the Lady Dragons finished in 15th place with a total team score of 340.

About the Teams

Coming off of a state championship in the 2014-15 season, the Southlake Carroll boys Cross Country team set out to repeat as champions in 2016. Falling just short of their goal, the Dragons finished second in the state behind champion Conroe the Woodlands, and leave this season with plenty to hang their hat on. Junior Reed Brown had yet another strong year for the boy’s teams as he finished no worse then 16th in each competition this year, as well as a first-place finish in the Nike Cross Regionals to go along placing 14th in the Nike National Meet. Junior Charlie Gardener also made waves in the Nike Regional meet, finishing in fourth place with a time of 17:13 in the 500 meters. With Carroll’s top two runners returning next season, it’s hard not to fathom a push towards a state championship next year.

After placing fourth in the State Meet last year, the Dragon girls Cross Country team improved during the 2015-16 season as they finished second in the state behind champion Flower Mound Marcus. Senior Kayli Jones ran her third fastest time of the season in the 5,000 meter state meet finishing with a time of 19:18.81. Sophomore Catherin Tracht proved to make headlines across the state of Texas as she finished 21st in the UIL State Regional Meet, to go along with finishing 24th in the UIL State meet.

“The Southlake Carroll Cross Country boys and girls teams enjoyed a successful 2015 season, training hard and winning often. Both teams showed their depth and fought fierce competitors in a tough season.”
