A Smarter Suitcase

Perhaps you forgot to unplug the toaster or leave enough kibble for the dog sitter. And did you remember to bring your presentation folders? No matter how prepared you might be for that weekly business trip, doubt will always creep in as you make your way to the airport. Upon arriving at check-in, you are now faced with another problem. “I’m sorry, but your carry-on weighs too much. You’ll have to check it.” And so it begins, before you even board the plane. Everyone has a love/hate relationship with luggage—especially carry-ons.

In a technology age that’s given us thermostats that regulate autonomously and watches that rival any “Get Smart” gadget, the founders of Silicon Valley-based technology startup Bluesmart Inc. knew the travel industry needed something smart as well. Through crowd-funding platform Indiegogo, Bluesmart Inc. raised more than $2 million in pre-orders from more than 8,000 backers in 110 countries, and launched its first product in 2014: the Bluesmart Carry-on.

What makes this luggage smart is not its charging station that allows travelers to charge their phones up to six times. No, the included 10.000 mAh battery that powers both an internal and external USB port is not that over-the-top. And the carry-on is designed with a built in scale to let you know before you even weigh in at the ticket counter that you’ll be directed to the checked-luggage line. That’s pretty handy, but might not be classified as smart. But we’re getting there.

What if your luggage could tell you that it has been left behind? Whether you were in a hurry to leave the house, the hotel or even the plane, the Bluesmart Carry-on will alert you, via your smartphone, that you have forgotten your luggage—and you’ll know right were you left it. But then panic sets in as you wonder who might rummage through your bag on the way to its rescue. Not to worry. It locks itself automatically whenever it is separated from you.

So what makes this luggage tick? Clearly it uses some sort of AI, right? No, the intelligence hub is simply the Bluesmart app, which gives you access to all the features of the carry-on. You can download the app for iOS or Android, and the luggage connects via BLE, 3G and GPS.

Made from polycarbonate and aluminum, the carry-on’s body is both durable and lightweight. The main compartment provides a large space (22” x 14” x 9”) for your clothes, shoes and other items, and the secondary compartment accommodates up to a 15-inch laptop. The carry-on will fit in almost all airline cabins, according to the website, but double check with your particular airline to be certain. Now all that’s left to do is to sit back and enjoy the flight.
