Southlake Carroll defensive back Robert Barnes has earned one of the most prestigious honors in program history.

Barnes received his U.S. Army All-American jersey on Tuesday afternoon, cementing his place as one of the nation’s top high school football players.

“It’s a huge opportunity,” Barnes said. “It’s a dream come true. As a high school football player, you dream and look forward to being a part of something like this. It’s an awesome opportunity. I’m blessed to be a part of it.”

The 17th annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl returns to San Antonio, Texas on Jan. 7 and will be played inside the Alamodome. It will be broadcast nationally on NBC.

Southlake Carroll head coach Hal Wasson was also presented with an award at the ceremony and praised Barnes for his accomplishment.

“We are very proud of Robert and his family,” Wasson said. “It signifies that he is an elite athlete. We are also very flattered for this program. We are proud of all of our players. Robert knows it’s a tribute to his teammates and the program.”

Barnes has made a number of big plays for Southlake Carroll at his safety spot this season and is one of the team’s senior leaders. After graduation Barnes plans to follow in his father Reggie's footsteps to play football at the University of Oklahoma.

After the first game of the year, Barnes also began lining up at wide receiver and now plays both ways full-time. He has recorded 12 receptions for 295 yards and two touchdowns en route to leading Southlake Carroll to a 4-1 start.

“I want to keep leading this team,” Barnes said. “I want to keep being a dominant force on both offense and defense and help my team win an outright district championship. We want to go on and win a state championship.”

Southlake Carroll returns to the field this Friday when it takes on Lewisville in an important district matchup.
