The Southlake Carroll Boys and Girls Cross Country teams earned second-place finishes at the Class 6A State Championship in Round Rock, Texas. Renovations to Old Settler’s Park meant the runners had to navigate a new and challenging course, but both the boys and the girls came away with a podium finish.

“We are extremely proud of our teams’ efforts at the state meet yesterday. I’m so proud of this senior class and the dedication they have shown throughout their four years in the program,” said head coach Justin Leonard. “Even though we came up a little short of the goal, the impact these kids have left will last and carry on for the next generation of Dragon runners. The journey has been fun, and the quest for excellence will continue. Thank you to all of our parents, teachers, coaches and community leaders for their continued support. We will be back and ready for the next journey.”

It was a repeat of last year’s state meet with the Dragon boys coming away with second, behind The Woodlands. Senior Reed Brown came in fourth overall, Nicolas Fernandes finished next for the Dragons in 11th place. Charlie Gardner was the next scoring Dragon, coming in 36th place followed by Evan Dunkel grabbing 54th and Enzo Mortimer took 92nd to finish out the scoring positions. Connor Rutledge came in 113th place and Juan Arcila took 141st, completing the varsity team.

The Lady Dragons had a repeat of last year also, coming in second place. Their team was led by senior Gillian Mortimer who took fourth place, followed by Ali White grabbing 20th, Sofia Santamaria came in 25th, Angie Riera was 36th and Ari Lopez was 50th, finishing out the scoring positions. Sarah McCabe was 69th and Cate Tracht came in 76th to complete the varsity team.
