It’s going to be an especially exciting summer for eight members of the Carroll Dragon Marching Band. Eight musicians will represent the Dragon Band and compete with various Drum Corps International (DCI) marching bands across the country. In previous years, one or two musicians represented the marching band, which is under the direction of Ken Johnson with assistant director David Walker.

Each year, DCI showcases the best of the best. More than 8,000 students audition for the fewer than 3,500 positions available in top-tier DCI member corps. In order to compete this summer, the students will spend the summer touring with their corps. Often, this means they will sleep on gym floors or buses.

Congratulations to the eight Dragons competing with DCI this summer:

Cole Deters | Troopers (Baritone)

Will Dunn | Phantom Regiment (Mellophone)

Ryan Guess | Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps (Bass Drum)

Austin Florence | Genesis (Mellophone)

John Miller Jr. | Genesis (Snare)

Kodi Myles | The Cadets (Front Ensemble-Marimba/Vibes)

Nathan Pollard | Troopers (Baritone)

Jacob Wilson | Santa Clara Vanguard (Bass Drum)

These Dragons have represented the Carroll music program very well over the years. Cole, Nathan and Jacob are members of the award-winning jazz program under the direction of David Lown. Austin was a state soloist for the French horn in 2015 and 2016. Six of the eight are current members of the indoor percussion show FROM DUST, which is under the direction of David Walker. John Miller, Jr. was one of the first students to participate in Carroll Indoor Percussion. Additionally, most of these students have leadership positions within the marching band or indoor percussion.

The annual Drum Corps International Tour is made up of more than 100 events throughout North America with several events in Texas. Click here to view local events to support the Dragons!
