Dragon Defense Bows Up in Big Win

Sep 05, 2017 11:51AM ● By Mike

For the second time in three years, Carroll’s football team traveled north of the Red River and returned to Southlake with a victory.

After topping Tulsa Union on the road in 2015, the Dragons squared off against Oklahoma power Broken Arrow on Friday and rallied in the fourth quarter for a 21-14 win.

Coppell transfer TJ McDaniel shined in his debut with the Dragons, finishing with 106 yards on 30 carries, including the game-tying touchdown with 9:10 remaining in the fourth quarter (5 yards) and the game-winning score less than four minutes later from 1 yard out.

McDaniel was complimented in the backfield by senior RB Tavian Gould who ran for 36 yards on just 6 carries while providing solid blocking which helped the Dragons prolong drives.

All eyes were on junior quarterback Will Bowers — who was making his first career start under center for the Dragons. Bowers bounced back from two interceptions and a fumble, keeping his composure and completing 20-of-26 passes for 258 yards (77-percent). His first-quarter touchdown pass to Cade Bell of 34 yards gave the Dragons a 7-0 lead after the teams had staged a defensive battle for the first 1.5 quarters.

Bell, the Dragon Pride Player of the Week would finish with 153 yards on eight receptions, while fellow receiver Colton Phillips chipped in five catches for 48 yards.

After several untimely turnovers, Carroll’s defense was called upon to keep the Tigers in check. Tim Wasson’s crew did exactly that —holding Broken Arrow without an offensive touchdown in the first half. The Tiger’s however did score on a very controversial play in the final minute of the first half after a lengthy interception return for a score.

The Dragons’ front harassed Arrow quarterback Lafayette Wright throughout the night and finished with four sacks, including two from Jacob Doddridge.

For the game, Wright threw for 159 yards, while Broken Arrow’s running game was limited to just 31 yards on 27 attempts.

Ryan Thompson and Matty Werner had 13 tackles and one sack apiece, while Michael Parrish forced a fumble and recovered another.
