Slap on a pair of suspenders and black rim glasses and pull up a chair at the latest trendy addition to our area's food scene: Whiskey Cake. The popular Plano restaurant opened its sixth restaurant and second DFW spot this June right on Interstate 635, and it's already wowing locals with its luxurious patio, industrial-chic atmosphere and locally sourced dishes.
Whiskey Cake started out with a mission to bring unique dining experiences to the suburbs that craved a high-quality restaurant. And they are continuing to do just that for Las Colinas locals looking for a new American tavern-inspired, farm-to-table menu served up in a quirky environment. Their dishes are often made in-house daily using ingredients from nearby vendors.
“We buy as much as we can locally and make everything onsite – including pickles, beef jerky and pimento cheese, and we bake our own bread and desserts. In addition, we have a large brining program for our poultry and make all fries and chips in-house,” says Scott Sharrer, Whiskey Cake's Vice President of Operations. “It's one of the largest from-scratch food establishments around.”
Start out right by ordering the Local Goat Cheese Fondue. With cheese from Lost Ruby Ranch, olive oil from Texas Olive Ranch and thyme grown in-house in their fresh vegetable garden, this appetizer is almost 100 percent locally sourced. Keep the Texas comfort food party going by ordering up the OMG Burger – served with beer battered onion rings, roasted criminis, muenster cheese, grain mustard, red Chile mayo, lettuce, and tomato on a challah bun. Don't worry, vegetarians. The Beyond Meat Burger is just as satisfying.
Leave room for dessert so you can sink your teeth into the restaurant's namesake. Their Whiskey Cake, a toffee torte topped with bourbon anglaise, spiced pecans and whipped cream, cannot be missed. They even sell it by the cake, so you can take it home and savor it for days to come.
For those who have traveled out east in the past to try the restaurant, this location provides new amenities that will keep you coming back – like a much larger whiskey library, a built-in bakery and a larger outdoor seating area.
And that whiskey library is sure to impress all the local spirit enthusiasts. They have a wide range of whiskeys, ryes and bourbons, so everyone can find the right pour for their taste buds. If you don't take your whiskey neat, try out one of their well-rounded cocktails featuring the beloved spirit. The Winchester, made with Chamomile-infused Dewar's 12, local honey, lemon, lavender bitters and laphroaig spirtz, is the perfect drink for a warm day spent on the patio.
“Our guests will also enjoy a unique, flavor-forward cocktail program unlike anything in the Irving area,” Sharrer says.
