To say that members of the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) have been busy is putting it lightly. In February, the Lakes Chapter is scheduled to send a large workforce to assist the Tarrant County Master Gardener Association (TCMGA) for spring planting. To get an idea of what’s ahead for the group, here’s a look at what YMSL was up to this fall.

Last month, YMSL Lakes Chapter partnered with Carroll ISD and TCMGA to renovate Durham Intermediate school garden. The garden was in need of some extra hands, and despite the cold weather, a multitude of dedicated young men were up for the task.

Every year, YMSL challenges its members to find a way to give an “Ultimate Gift” back to their communities. Seeing the opportunity to aid TCMGA in caring for Durham Intermediate’s garden, the members selected the project as their 2018 Ultimate Gift. The mothers and sons of the Lakes Chapter got to work under the supervision of a Master Gardeners team. Working in two-hour shifts, 150 volunteers cared for the garden and two new keyhole gardens.

In February, they will be at it again, assisting the Master Gardeners prep the garden for spring planting.  They will plant the keyhole gardens with vegetables which they will then harvest and donate to one of the several food pantries such as GRACE and the Community Table Food Pantry.

The YMSL Lakes Chapter is a nonprofit service organization for mothers and their high-school aged sons from the communities of both Westlake and Southlake, whose mission is to assist, serve and support those who are in need in their communities, develop leadership skills among their membership and promote mother/son relationships.
