Travel makes the world go round…

But for the 3,000 Sabre employees who work at the Southlake headquarters, “There is no place like home:”

Originally established in 1960 The Sabre Travel Network has been a pioneer of the travel industry for almost half a century.  Over this time, the network has grown to include Sabre Airline Solutions and the online travel powerhouse Travelocity.  All together these companies help consumers connect with an unlimited supply of travel opportunities through providing distribution and technology solutions across the travel industry. Today, Sabre Holdings’ 156 acre campus (just off of Kirkwood Boulevard) in Southlake acts as the launching pad for a truly global company of over 9,000 employees who conduct business in over 45 countries worldwide and of course on the world wide web.

Across the globe, travelers quite frequently benefit from the many travel related services of Sabre- whether they realize it or not.  What’s staggering to understand is the fact that more than one-third (36%) of all worldwide reservations are made through Sabre and its innovative technologies.

Locally speaking, the city of Southlake and all of its residents continue to reap the benefits of having such a successful and community minded corporation based in our “home”.  When close friends and neighbors Scott Alvis, of Sabre and City Council member, John Terrell saw an opportunity for the two organizations to join forces, the entirety of Sabre leaped at the chance to incorporate their core values of being a not just a good, but a “Great Corporate Citizen”.  Likewise, the city quickly embraced the opportunity to work alongside and learn from a highly innovative and strategically sound organization such as Sabre.

A mutually beneficial partnership officially took flight early in 2006 when executives from both sides met to get better acquainted with each other and the opportunities in front of them.  Before the end of the first year the city, along with the insight of Sabre’s Director of Corporate Performance, Wendy Skinner was able to complete a Strategy Map.  The strategy map project allowed Southlake city officials to benchmark the strategic management process from an industry leader.  In the end, the goal of enhanced monitoring of the city’s own progress towards its strategic focus areas was well in place.

The partnership goes beyond strategic planning as Sabre has become one of Southlake’s most enthusiastic providers of volunteers and corporate funding for such local causes as Art in the Square, the Southlake Sister Cities, the “Dragon Classic” golf tournament and the colorfully popular Southlake Stampede (“All Around the World” by Lamberto Alvarez can be seen in Town Square).

Sabre’s culture seems to be at the forefront of all of their internal and extracurricular activities.  At the Southlake Headquarters a fine balance has been struck between their 1960’s logistics house and 21st century internet beginnings.  The best of both worlds collide to form a financially viable and socially responsible company with a head and a heart.

Sabre employees follow the old time adage of working and playing hard.  Any company whose mascot doubles as a lawn ornament can’t take themselves too seriously…could they?  So Southlake Style reached out to some of Sabre executives to get a little more perspective of life on the road and here at home.
