For generations of Carroll Dragons, Old Dragon Stadium has been more than a field. The storied site at Carroll Avenue and Dove Road has been the setting for triumph, teamwork and community pride; now, it is set to take on a new role as the City of Southlake moves forward with a proposed plan to purchase the property from Carroll ISD and transform it into a community park.
“The City of Southlake is proud to announce the purchase of Old Dragon Stadium from Carroll Independent School District, in a partnership that reflects our shared commitment to preserve green and park space, while we protect the tradition of Old Dragon Stadium and Carroll Dragons football,” said Southlake Mayor Shawn McCaskill in a Facebook post.
District documents show the City purchased the stadium and athletic fields for roughly $8.75 million. The revenue from the sale will go into the district’s general fund, supporting ongoing operations and educational priorities.
The new park, which does not include the CISD administration building, would honor the site’s historic roots while providing new opportunities for recreation and connection. Early concepts envision flexible practice fields, a playground and a walking trail celebrating Carroll Dragons football — complete with tributes to teams, coaches, players and state championships. While designs remain in the early stages, city leaders emphasize that the community will play a key role in shaping the vision.
The proposed project supports the City’s Parks, Recreation & Open Space Master Plan, which guides long-term investments in Southlake’s award-winning park system. Collaboration with the Parks and Recreation Board, Southlake Parks Development Corporation, CISD, and community partners is expected to begin in 2026 following City approval.
