Atmos Energy is working to make a difference for struggling families at the moment. In addition to suspending natural gas disconnections last month, Atmos Energy is investing $1.5 million to restock local food banks and support families affected by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a media release.
“More than 3 million U.S. workers filed for unemployment benefits last week alone, and many of those are parents with children who rely on school food programs for breakfast and lunch every day,” Atmos Energy President Kevin Akers says in the release. “While many will be left wondering how to pay rent, afford medical bills or make the next car payment, we envision this crucial support will help remove some of the mystery around where those folks might find their next meal.”
As part of its donation, Atmos is giving $30,000 to local charities in the North Texas area. Its contributions include $15,000 toward GRACE, $10,000 toward 6 Stones and $5,000 to Community Storehouse.
“We’re doing this to quickly stock shelves and food pantries, and also support students and families who have faced challenges throughout this very, very difficult time,” Pipeline Marketing Vice President Vic DeVincenzo says in an announcement video.
In addition to those contributions, Atmos also added GRACE as a “Sharing the Warmth” partner, which bolsters assistance programs offered by the nonprofit. Atmos is donating funds to help clients pay for their natural gas bills.
