“I love podcasts and, anecdotally, I feel like they're growing in popularity as a medium that has well-produced, interesting content that is constantly updating,” Huffman says. “Also, from a city official perspective, we are always trying to engage citizens on the media of their choosing, and if folks love podcasts, it's worth it to me to try to engage them there.”
His weekly podcast, released on Wednesdays or Thursdays, includes restaurant reviews, community event coverage and much more. At the end of each episode, he sits down with a notable local and has a conversation with them about their role in Southlake. In his first two episodes, he chatted with Mayor Laura Hill and Southlake DPS Public Information Officer Brad Uptmore.
In his next episode, which will be available for download on November 15, Huffman speaks with Texas State Rep. Giovanni Capriglione. The podcast is available on iTunes, Google Play and SoundCloud, so it’s easy to tune in and stay up-to-date on what’s happening in Southlake.
City Council Place 5 John Huffman wears a whole lot of hats. Now, he is sporting one more: podcast host. He is sharing the city’s stories in a whole new way with “Southlake This Week With John Huffman.”
As an avid podcast listener, Huffman was interested in creating a show that had a local slant to it. He says he wanted to highlight what's happening in Southlake and let locals learn a little bit more about their city and its residents.
“My goal is to shine a giant spotlight on all the great things this city has to offer – great restaurants, notable news and events and interesting, dynamic people making a difference in this town and beyond,” Huffman says. “I feel like I've met so many interesting people in the last 10 years and constantly have interesting conversations, and I really just feel like sharing those interesting conversations with whoever wants to listen.”
While he does already have a big social presence – whether it be through his Facebook Live videos with City Council Place 2 Shawn McCaskill or his family’s reviews of local restaurants – he saw an opportunity to expand on that and reach listeners through this new medium.
