You don’t have to travel very far if you’re looking to go to the No. 1 zoo in America. In fact, it’s just a short drive down to Fort Worth.
After creating a national list of 20 zoos that excelled in animal care and human interaction, "USA Today" opened the poll for people to vote on their favorites, according to a media release. After fans casted their votes, the Fort Worth Zoo finished in "USA Today’s" top five zoos and secured the top spot for the first time in the zoo’s history.
“Thank you to the many people all across the United States for casting your votes and once again showing your support for the Fort Worth Zoo,” board chairwoman Ramona Bass says. “We are humbled and thrilled by this honor. It is the work of our dedicated staff and the support from our loyal guests and friends that make the Fort Worth Zoo truly special.”
The Fort Worth Zoo draws out over 1 million visitors every year thanks to its 7,000 animals, according to the media release.
Since rolling out its $100 million "African Savanna" master plan in 2018, the zoo has been recognized with several accolades for its conservation and education efforts, including being named Best Zoo in Texas by “Yahoo Travel,” the No. 5 Zoo in the Nation by “USA Travel Guide,” the No. 1 attraction in the DFW Metroplex by "Zagat" and a Top 10 zoo by "Family Fun Magazine" and "TripAdvisor’s" Travelers’ Choice Awards. Its newest attraction, "Elephant Springs," will debut in 2021.
