Hurricane Laura, a 150-mph category 4 hurricane, tore through Texas and Louisiana last week, killing at least 10 people and causing up to $12 billion in damages, according to “NPR.” If you would like to lend a helping hand, here are a few relief efforts you can support on the road to recovery.
Quick to respond to natural disasters, Salvation Army teams are currently deployed in Louisiana and Texas providing food, drinks and emergency services to Hurricane Laura survivors. Contributing donations and time can help families during their time of need. Call 1.844.458.4673 or visit SalvationArmyUSA.org to see how you can help best.
When it comes to food assistance, the Houston Food Bank is doing everything it can to feed families in the areas affected by the hurricane. However, it needs help too — that’s why it is accepting donations of all kinds. You can send food, cash and mask donations to its office at 535 Portwall St., or you can set up a virtual fundraiser at HoustonFoodBank.org.
Providing disaster relief since 1979, Operation USA’s feet are already on the ground providing assistance in Houston and New Orleans. You can help, too, by donating cash to OpHSA.org or donating material aid such as medical supplies, clothing, hygiene products and more from its wish list. You can email Info@OpUSA.org to see which items they’re most in need of.
Currently on a search-and-rescue operation for survivors by the gulf, the United Cajun Navy is in need of donations and volunteers for their relief efforts. You can donate cash, gas, water and generators to the initiative or sign up for a truck or trailer delivery shift online at UnitedCajunNavy.com.
Around 200 St. Bernard Project volunteers are split between Houston and New Orleans providing cleanup and assisting residents with recovery efforts. You can help by either donating or hosting an online fundraiser for St. Bernard’s action initiatives. Directly donating to the nonprofit will help provide PPE for its team members and disaster kits for flooded homes.
GlobalGiving Disaster Recovery Network
While GlobalGiving helps with donating to several charity efforts around the world, its disaster recovery network launched a relief fund to help feed and clothe hurricane survivors, as well as provide medicine and shelter. You can donate or launch your own fundraiser towards the effort at GlobalGiving.org.
Focused on helping homeless and low-income families, Family Promise has set up a fund to help those who live on the gulf that were directly impacted by hurricane Laura. Funds donated to the nonprofit will go toward providing shelter and stabilization services to help residents get back on their feet.
