Babe’s Chicken Dinner House was recently named one of the 14 best locally-owned Southern restaurants in the country by "Southern Living" readers.
Positive press for Babe's is no surprise to anyone who has eaten at the southern-style restaurant, which has a cult following in the Metroplex. There are no menus at Babe's -- customers simply pick a main entree of chicken fried steak, chicken tenders, fried catfish or smoked chicken, to name a few. Waiters and waitresses then bring unlimited homestyle sides of biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn to eat alongside the main course.
Since opening its original location in Roanoke in 1993, Babe's has expanded in locations (ten restaurants scattered throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex) and in menu choices (now including smoked chicken, chicken tenders and catfish, to name a few). The eatery is no stranger to national recognition: Babe's has been named “Best Family Restaurant in Texas” by Official Best of America and was featured on Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate.”
“The restaurant business can be complicated and demand a lot,” said Paul Vineyard, who created Babe's with his wife, Mary Jean. “But it’s an addicting career. I love it.”
Now in year 30, Babe's Chicken Houses also sells everything from honey to sorghum cane syrup and strawberry preserves. Carry-out is also available.
“We get so much enjoyment out of having people have such a great time here," said Tiffany Vinyard-Wheeless, Paul's daughter. "On a Friday night, it’s electric because the music is loud, kids are jumping up to do the hokey pokey and everyone is passing around food. It’s wonderful to see such love between family and friends.”
