As you don your red,brwhite and blue, and place a few extra American flags in your yard, maybe go andbrshake the hand of a local hero. Larry Hinkle, a Southlake native and disabledbrveteran, is stopping in Grapevine on Friday as he travels across the country onbra journey to bring awareness to the nation's veterans and first responders. Thebrcommunity is invited to join Hinkle and his family and friends at 6 p.m. Junebr24 for an evening of fellowship, fun and music at the Grapevine VFW Post 10454,br221 N. Main Street.
Hinkle started hisbrjourney called “The Hump,” on April 3 from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, andbrwill complete his mission when he steps onto Camp Pendleton, California, wherebrhe was stationed as a United States Marine from 2000-2004. Hinkle will walkbrmore than 2,600 miles across America.
Throughout the The Hump,brHinkle will be stopping by Veterans Administration facilities, Veterans ofbrForeign Wars (VFW) posts, American Legion, Salvation Army locations, nursingbrhomes and homeless shelters to connect with veterans and share their stories.
Hinkle hopes to createbrawareness about the problems veterans face every day, especially the disabled.
“It took me many years tobrget my own situation as a veteran figured out,” said Hinkle via press release.br“I know what a trying process that was and how mentally exhausting that was atbrtimes. Anything that I can do to help, is what I am looking to accomplish.brServing veterans from Coast to Coast, One Step at a Time is the motto of ThebrHump.”
