The Department of Special Programs at Carroll ISD is committed to providing all students with special needsbrthe educational opportunities and support to reach their full potential andbrbecome fully integrated into the community. For many students and youngbradults, this means developing the skills and experiences needed for employment.
During high school, mostbrstudents in Alternate Curriculum classes are taught the soft skills needed tobrget and hold a job. Since the best place to learn work skills is inbrauthentic environments, CISD seeks local companies that will allow theirbrbusiness to serve as a classroom. This year, Taziki's, Trader Joe's, OldbrNavy and VarioSystems have allowed students to practice working in theirbrbusinesses with staff support and job coaching. These non-paid internshipsbrhave been amazing opportunities.
The Southlake Sonic andbrHome Depot have also partnered with CISD by hiring Regan Bravo, a C-STARbrstudent for part-time work. He works one shift a week at Sonicbrdistributing condiments, and works two days a week at Home Depot gatheringbrcarts from the parking lot.
Recently, DeeDee Anderson, browner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Southlake, hired two special programs studentsbrto assist in her business. Alyssa Martin and Julia Sanders work two shiftsbra week assisting in helping serve customers by filling orders and helpingbrprepare supplies and cakes for pick-up. Originally, CISD provided a staffmember to job coach the young ladies, but is now fading support as the girlsbrbecome independent employees.
CISD is proud to workbrwith local businesses and appreciates the opportunities they offerbrstudents. For more information on how you can partner with this program, contactbrMelinda Mason, Transition Specialist, at 817.949.8281 or Melinda.mason@southlakecarroll.edu.
