Phase I construction of The Marq, Southlake's community recreation center, is right on schedule, according to Director of Community Services Chris Tribble. Plans to lay the foundation are underway for January 2015, and the grand opening of Phase I is expected to take place late 2015.
Phase I includes the Aria outdoor amphitheater, an events hall with a seating capacity of 300, and a senior center. This phase has a total cost of $15.1 million, but has already been funded through the city's existing savings. However, Phase II, which includes spaces for fitness, indoor aquatics, performance training, a gymnasium, an indoor jog/walk track, an indoor playground and multipurpose classrooms for programs, will require a vote.
According to Southlake Mayor John Terrell, the city has already established a funding solution for residents to vote on. Phase II, expected to cost $31.8 million, is “contingent on the outcome of an election where the voters will be asked to repurpose a portion of the current Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD) sales tax to fund construction,” according to the city. Southlake residents will go to the polls in May 2015 to vote on the fund's new allotment proposal.
