Southlake Style’s office coordinator Kelly Rose was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, but she didn't let it slow her down. With a bright smile and attitude, Kelly brought hope to her story, along with several other women that went through circumstances similar to her own.
When were you diagnosed with breast cancer?
October 2014. Within the week of my diagnosis, I was scheduled for a double mastectomy. My reconstruction happened in December 2014, and I started chemotherapy a week later.
How did you take the news?
I was totally stunned. I found it through a routine mammogram that I never missed. But as soon as the radiologist left me in the waiting room, I knew. My heart was beating so hard. It was the most eye-opening experience.
How did you get involved with the nonprofit Susan G. Komen?
I always knew about Susan G. Komen, but the first time I did the Race for the Cure was October 2015. I had tears the whole time. My husband was by my side through it all, and we wanted to pay it forward. Seeing all the people participating in the walk was just amazing. This year will be my fifth time doing the walk.
How do you bring light to the situation?
I think it’s my positive attitude. I just try to put as much positivity out there that I can. You always have to find the positive and light.
How are you involved with Susan G. Komen now?
I am the chairperson for Hope Village, the survivor/forever fighters tent. And I have been for the past three years. It’s amazing to see the survivors get VIP Treatment. They get goodie bags, flowers and comradery. The whole thing is to make them feel special. My perspective changed once I saw what Susan G. Komen’s donations went to in our local community.
What makes you interested in giving back?
I’ve been involved in charities since I was a child. That’s all we have ever done. We always wanted to give back to the community and give to different causes. My husband and I don’t have children, so charity is like our kid.
What keeps you grounded?
I have been married 28 years to a man I have loved since seventh grade. We have two spoiled golden retrievers, Kenlly and Kandy.
How can people donate to the cause?
If you want to help, you can donate here. I’ve been within the top five survivors for fundraising for the past five years.
