Members of Carroll Senior High School’s Young America’s Foundation chapter placed 2,977 flags on campus Sept. 11 as part of YAF’s nationwide “9/11: Never Forget Project.” The display remained in place through Sept. 14.
Students Justen Phalen and Lara Alajajian spent much of the day assembling the tribute, with fellow chapter member Rhianna Tejada also helping.
“For me, honoring the victims of September 11th is a solemn duty that we as Americans have and often ignore,” Phalen says. “I think that our generation in particular, having not been alive to experience 9/11, we need to remember the toll that was taken on that day.”
Alajajian says the sheer number of flags made the history feel more immediate.
“Planting those 2,977 flags in the ground reminds you how real that day was and how it still impacts thousands of families and the country as a whole today,” she says. “I couldn’t stop thinking that each flag I placed represented a life and just how important it is to never forget.”
The Carroll display marked the 25th anniversary of the attacks and remained on campus for four days.
