Velvet paintings of Stevie Wonder and Elvis graced the walls of the first Chuy’s way back in 1982 when founders Mike Young and John Zapp turned a BBQ joint in Barton Springs (near Austin) into a Mexican food restaurant. The great thing about Chuy’s eclectic atmosphere is that you may not find those Stevie Wonder and Elvis masterpieces in every location. Their motto, “If you’ve seen one Chuy’s, you’ve seen one Chuy’s,” holds true for the new Southlake location, as well.
Sure, the Southlake Chuy’s that recently opened in Carroll Pointe has a few pieces of the restaurant’s standard décor like the nacho car, but this Chuy’s has an Elvis shrine—complete with a velvet Elvis painting paying homage to the original location, an entryway covered in vintage cameras, and hidden objects. Although we enjoyed our extended dinner stay, we couldn’t find many of the 24 miniature baby dolls hidden throughout the restaurant. We wish you luck though!
Aside from the unique atmosphere, Chuy’s is known for their authentic, affordable Tex-Mex fare—dishes are made to order from fresh ingredients. The Big As Yo' Face Steak Burrito was plenty of food for dinner and enough to take for lunch the next day. It’s a homemade, 12" flour tortilla stuffed with refried beans, cheese and, in my case, seasoned ground sirloin. When ordering most dishes at Chuy’s you can choose from seven sauces. The ranchero vegetarian red sauce is made from roasted tomatoes, cilantro, onions, bell peppers and spices. This is considered mild, but to spice things up a bit, you can opt for the Hatch green chile sauce. The burrito is also served with your choice of Mexican rice or green chile rice.
If chicken is your go-to Mexican favorite, try Chuy’s Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Made with
freshly roasted, hand-pulled chicken and cheese with Boom Boom sauce. The sauce is made with cheese, roasted New Mexican green chiles, tomatillos, green onions, cilantro and lime juice, you’re sure to experience pure palate pleasure.
Chuy’s is also known for their famous margaritas with flavors and recipes alternating throughout the year. But you have the opportunity to enjoy their famous house margarita year round and a perfect happy hour during which to enjoy it. The restaurant is an Austin staple Southlake residents can now enjoy. Come for the food and stay for the fun—or vice versa.
