Southlake is no stranger to Olympic appearances. Between Hailey Hernandez and Sam Watson, there are many Olympians who call Southlake home. Now the city is celebrating its newest medalist in Paralympian Korban Best.
Growing up, Korban competed in several sports, including soccer, jiu-jitsu, swimming and golf. He was even named “Dodgeball Champion” at Camp Mania when he was a camper and volunteer. Despite having an upper right-arm deviation, Korban never let that slow him down, running for both Carroll track and field and varsity football.
“When Korban was very little in first grade, he was telling us he was ‘Cheetah fast,’” Korban’s mom Kimberly says in MySouthlakeNews.com. “He was always saying he wanted to be a professional athlete. Every kid says that. You just never really know where it’s going to go, but he really stuck with it. His work ethic is undeniable.”
At the 2024 Paralympic games, Korban made history as the first American man to earn a silver medal in the T47 100-meter, as well as a bronze in the universal relay. To mark the occasion, Southlake will celebrate Korban’s historical victory alongside family and friends at Town Hall this weekend.
“He is an amazing person — son, friend, brother,” Kimberly told MySouthlakeNews.com. “All the titles he has, including Paralympian, are just a testament to how incredible he is.”
If you’re looking forward to celebrating Korban’s success too, stop by Southlake Town Hall at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
