A new chapter begins this weekend for former Southlake Carroll Dragon great Quinn Ewers, who is set to make his first NFL start as the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals. This milestone marks an incredible journey from Dragon Stadium to the professional gridiron — and Southlake is cheering him on every step of the way.
The Dolphins’ decision to hand the keys to the offense to Ewers comes amid a tumultuous season in Miami. With the team officially eliminated from playoff contention, head coach Mike McDaniel opted to bench veteran quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after a string of turnovers and inconsistent play. Ewers, a seventh-round pick (231st overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft, will get the start as the Dolphins look to evaluate their future and give their young signal-caller an opportunity to shine.
For Southlake football fans looking for something to cheer for after the team’s UIL state semifinal loss, the timing could not be better.
Ewers passed up on his senior season at Carroll to attend Ohio State University. Despite not suiting up for his final prep season, Ewers still finished his Dragon career with 6,445 yards and 73 touchdowns, landing him as the 5th all-time leading passer at the school known for its quarterback culture.
Ewers continued his success at the collegiate level. After beginning his stint at Ohio State, he transferred to the University of Texas, where he became the Longhorns’ franchise pivot. During his three seasons in Austin, he threw for over 9,000 yards and 68 touchdowns, leading Texas to back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinal appearances and capturing a Big 12 Championship along the way. His strong arm, poise in the pocket and leadership earned him All-Conference honors and widespread respect among college football circles.
Now, his grit and determination will be on display in the NFL spotlight and we will be watching and cheering along his NFL journey.
