Mike McCarthy, left, with quarterbacks Trey Lance and Dak Prescott, prepare before a 2024 regular season game. The team announced Jan. 13 that McCarthy would not return as the Cowboys head coach in 2025.
After five seasons and three playoff appearances, Mike McCarthy will not return as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2025.
McCarthy and the Cowboys could not agree on the framework of a new contract, per reports. His original deal, signed in 2020, was set to expire Jan. 14.
McCarthy has a career .610 career winning percentage, won a Super Bowl and has taken his teams to the playoffs 12 times in 18 seasons as the head coach in Green Bay and Dallas. He went 6-10 in his first year in Dallas, but rebounded with three straight 12-win seasons and subsequent playoff berths.
Entering his contract season and with high expectations, McCarthy endured season-ending injuries to, among others, quarterback Dak Prescott and cornerback Trevon Diggs en route to a 7-10 record.
With the Cowboys' season ending on Jan. 5, McCarthy and ownership have had eight days to work on a new contract. The team denied the Chicago Bears permission to interview McCarthy in Jan.
Dallas will now begin the search for the tenth head coach in franchise history. It has been 30 years since the franchise's last Super Bowl victory, and the team has not qualified for the NFC Championship Game in that span.
