The National Endowment of the Arts recently named 12 winners of its 2020 musical theater songwriting challenge. One of its winners is former Carroll Dragon Soleil Singh.
A recent graduate from the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Soleil is currently a freshman at Yale University. According to a media release, she composed and wrote a song called “Love In The Scene,” which tells the story of an aspiring actress pursuing a career in theater against her father’s wishes. She was one of two Texans selected from nearly 200 applications in 41 states for the organization’s third year of presenting the prestigious honor.
“These talented young people and the varying styles and themes of their songs speak to the energizing diversity of our country,” Arts Endowment chairman Mary Anne Carter says in a media release. “Offering this life-changing opportunity to more young artists this year is especially exciting, and I look forward to following their progress and listening to their songs.”
Soleil and the competition’s other winners will be paired up with mentors and music directors to refine their compositions and have them performed by New York musicians and vocalists in November. Their songs will then be compiled into a songbook by Concord Theatricals.
