Ten Carroll ISD players and two teams were inducted into the 2019 Athletics Hall of Honor during its banquet on Jan. 25 at Hilton Southlake. After Dragon football coach Riley Dodge gave the invocation, CISD Executive Director of Athletics Steve Keasler presented and inducted the 12 honorees representing Carroll sports in football, baseball, basketball, swimming, soccer and track.
One of those honorees was 1996 player Chance Caple, who played both Carroll baseball and football. Over his four-year letterman baseball career, he won 224 games and led his team to the State tournament in his senior year. He played baseball at Texas A&M for three years before he became the first Dragon in Carroll history to be drafted in the first round of the 1999 MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Another honoree was 1965 player Eddie Cheatham, who was part of the first graduating class of Carroll Senior High School and served as the first Dragons quarterback. After graduating with a civil engineering degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1972, he came back to Southlake in 1985 and spearheaded projects for Cheatham & Associates before he passed in 2012.
A 1996 graduate, Carey Clayton was one of two honorees to be recognized for both football and track. The first offensive lineman to make it to the NFL, Carey has racked up accolades on both the football and track field, including All-Region, All-Metro and All-Area team for football and the two-time district shot put champion and the 1996 Regional Shot Put winner. After graduating from the University of Texas at El Paso, he went on to play for several teams including the San Diego Chargers, the San Francisco 49ers, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans.
The other honoree recognized for both football and track was 2006 player Clint Renfro, who was an All-District receiver on the 2004 State Championship team and the district champion in the 300-meter hurdles. Clint was a State runner for both his sophomore and junior year and received a gold medal in his senior year. His time of 36.2 was one of the state’s fastest all-time performances and the second-fastest time in the country.
For girls basketball, 1973 player Tina Mitchell, 1972 player Peggy O’Brien and 1997 player Karen Clayton Young were all recognized. Tina and Peggy were both part of the first girls basketball state tournament team in 1972, and they both represented Carroll in the annual North-South All-Star game and the Texas vs. Oklahoma All-Star game. Karen, meanwhile, was a three-year starter and led the Lady Dragons to three consecutive playoff appearances, and racked up district MVP, All-Area, All-State and All-American honors.
For soccer, Greg Oglesby was inducted for coaching the Dragons from 1994 to 2018. Responsible for helping form Carroll’s soccer program in the first place, Carroll soccer went on to win seven district championships, nine area championships, four regional championships and two state titles during Greg’s tenure. He was also recognized as coach of the year by "The Fort Worth Star-Telegram" seven times and "The Dallas Morning News" four times.
In swimming, 2014 swimmer Jonathan Roberts led the Carroll Dragons to four state championships in a row during his high school career. A four year All-American and four-time individual state champion, Jonathan eventually swam for the University of Texas at Austin, where he swam four-time NCAA Division 1 All-American and national champion in the 800-meter freestyle relay.
On the running track, 2003 runner Tashia Wooldridge was a district champion in the 400-meter dash, qualified for regionals in the 200 and 400-meter dash and lettered all four years of her high school career. She finished sixth at the UIL State Track Meet in 2001 and became the first Carroll individual sprinter to qualify. She attended Abilene Christian University on a full track scholarship and placed sixth on the Lonestar Conference Championship as a freshman.
Finally, the 2002 boys baseball team and the 1975 girls basketball team were both inducted into the Athletic Hall of Honor, the boys for winning Carroll’s first state championship since 1982 and the girls for winning its first State Championship ever.
