Students from Carroll Senior High School have earned a spot among the final eight teams competing in the 24th annual International Public Policy Forum (IPPF) Finals, the only global debate contest to combine written and oral advocacy.
On May 3, team members Tanya Kuriakose, Amber Lin, Nethra Tummalapalli, and Anushka Velala, coached by Anthony Brown, will compete at the Harold Pratt House in New York City for the IPPF World Championship and a $10,000 grand prize.
“Out of a six-month competition involving 283 teams from around the world, this team has emerged as one of the elite eight,” says William A. Brewer III, chairman of the Brewer Foundation and co-founder of the IPPF. “Now, they will travel to New York City for the final rounds of the tournament and transform their written advocacy into oral debates for an opportunity to win cash prizes and take home the Brewer Cup.”
Founded in 2001 by the Brewer Foundation and now co-administered by NYU, the IPPF challenges students to debate key public policy issues. This year’s resolution: “Equitable access to pharmaceuticals should be prioritized over protecting intellectual property rights.”
The final rounds will showcase the students’ ability to translate written argument into live debate.
