One Carroll Dragon came up with a creative solution to fixing his trombone slide inside the new STEAM Center.
During the Carroll Dragon Band’s journey to state, sophomore Alex Charlton performed alongside his band, marching on the field and playing his trombone. But throughout the semester, Alex’s slide accrued dents on it due to bumping into objects during the season.
“I have always seen custom carbon fiber trombone slides online, but they were very expensive,” Alex says. “I figured it couldn’t be that hard to build one myself.”
Several nights and 20 hours of computer-aided design later, Alex 3D-modeled and printed a brand new trombone slide in Kevlar. Alex says the slide works very well and he hopes to continue using it in marching band competitions next year.
“It’s about the same weight, if not a little lighter,” he says. “I am at a point now where it is hard to come up with improvements to my design. I am proud of how my slide turned out.”
You can catch Alex and his new Kevlar slide with the marching band at future playoff games with the Carroll Dragons this season.
