Madrid, Spain - August 11, 2021: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the classic winter story, an old edition with illustrations by John Leech
Carroll Theatre is bringing two literary legends together this holiday season with "William Shakespeare's Christmas Carol": a clever, festive mashup of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic and the Bard’s most iconic characters.
In this witty reimagining by Ian Doescher, Ebenezer Scrooge becomes a wealthy theater owner visited by his old partner, Marlowe. The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future are transformed into Shakespearean favorites, including Puck ("A Midsummer Night’s Dream"), Falstaff ("Henry V"), and the Ghost of King Hamlet. Even Benedick and Beatrice appear as the ever-worried Cratchits, with a full cast of familiar characters delivering Dickens’ story entirely in iambic pentameter.
Audiences can expect heavily stylized acting and a Tim Burton–esque Expressionist aesthetic, with bold lighting and set design that bring Scrooge’s inner world to life. The result? A show that’s sure to be as visually striking as it is heartfelt, as both a tribute and a twist on a timeless Christmas tale.
Performances will take place at Carroll Senior High School on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m., Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available here.
