The countdown has started for Carroll Theatre students. Every year, Carroll Theatre presents the 24 Hour Play Project, a unique experience where students write, produce and perform four original short plays by themselves. Theatre director Jamie Pringle says this is the third time the company has produced the show, and it possesses creative energy all its own.
“About 40 student playwrights, directors, technicians and actors meet for dinner Friday night,” Jamie says. “In a matter of 24 hours, these students will write, design, direct, tech, memorize and perform in a world premiere of their theatre piece that didn't exist 24 hours earlier.”
Carroll Theatre Boosters vice president Kristina Guzman says this experiment focuses on intense team building, self-expression and confidence building to allow the theater kids to perform their own stories rather than simply emulate the work of another playwright.
“The idea is to create an environment and understand what it’s like to be a playwright,” Kristina says. “This is about development for the kids and getting to see what it’s like to see your own play on the stage.”
The production groups will be assigned on Friday evening. The shows will debut 24 hours later at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Carroll Senior High School at 1501 W. Southlake Blvd. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the door.
