Four former Dragon athletes, a long-time supporter and an administrator have joined the privileged ranks of the Dragon Athletic Hall of Honor's Class of 2016. The festivities were held both during the Homecoming Parade in Southlake Town Square last Wednesday. They were also recognized before the homecoming game on Friday night, where the Dragon football team went on to defeat Byron Nelson.
New candidates are nominated each year, but only a few are selected by the hall's committee. The remaining nominees stay on the list indefinitely, while the selected are inducted in the fall.
Nominees can be coaches, teachers, administrators, athletes, fans, or booster club members who have contributed significantly to Carroll ISD athletics programs.
This year's inductees are Ed Beauvais, Sam Booker, Kate Eveland-Schierholtz, Dr. Ted Gillum, Mike Uldrich and Chase Wasson.
Booker, Uldrich and Wasson were all football players for the Dragons, each from a different era in Carroll history. Most recently, Wasson led the football team at quarterback in its move to Class 5A back in 2002. Son of current coach Hal Wasson, Chase led the team to an undefeated season and a state championship. That year, Carroll became the first program to win a title in the first year after moving up in classification.
Uldrich, also a quarterback, was on the Dragons' first football state championship in 1988, led the team to its first-ever 16-0 season and was the first Carroll quarterback to throw for 1,000 yards in a single season.
Booker lettered in football and baseball. As a pitcher, "Dr. K" led his team to the school's first baseball state title in 1982. He led the Dragon football squad to a 9-1 record as a quarterback in 1981. Booker went on to be the pitching coach of the 2002 state title team at Carroll.
The final former student-athlete inductee was Eveland-Schierholtz, who was a basketball and track star for Carroll. She joins her sister, Kristi, who was inducted last year. She finished her high school career as the school’s all-time leading brscorer. In track, she earned a brregional title in the 4×400.
Beauvais has supported Southlake and the Dragons since 1989 and served as one of the original members of the Dragon Council. His volunteer efforts for the team have included
painting the field at old Dragon Stadium, organizing car shows for the brCABC, working the chains at sub-varsity football games and manning the brclock at football and soccer games.
Finally, Dr. Gillum served as the Carroll ISD Superintendent from 1996 to 2002. He was critical in leading the district during a time of massive growth. Over a six-year span, under Gillum's direction, CISD opened Durham Intermediate/Elementary, brEubanks Intermediate and Rockenbaugh and Old Union Elementary schools, brDragon Stadium and the CISD Aquatics Center.
