The Southlake Carroll Dragons boys and girls Water Polo teams are set to begin a challenging and successful season. Starting in March, both boys and girls teams have some big shoes to fill in order to match their success from last year.
The 2015-16 girls varsity water polo team begin their season as the defending state champions. They claimed the crown after defeating Clear Springs with an 18-4 victory in the 2015-14 TISCA State Water Polo Championship held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center at the University of Texas Austin campus.
The boys 2015-16 varsity hope to improve on their fifth place finish at last year's TISCA tournament. The boys were stuck with a rough spot in the bracket facing off against powerhouse teams like The Woodlands and Clear Lake.
The Lady Dragons made another piece of history at the TISCA tournament by being the first ever North Texas team to capture a state championship title in water polo.
Head coach Joey Yglesias said, “the girls' team success can be attributed to hard work the girls put in during the regular school season and the off season. The high school season lasts only three month, so any additional work they do during the off season pays off tremendously.”
The Dragons water polo season runs from March through May with tournaments taking place every weekend at various facilities throughout the North Texas region. The teams practices four to five times per week with practice starting at 6am at the Southlake Natatorium Aquatics Center.
On a wall at the Dragons practice facility is a poster that reads: A whole new tradition, Southlake Carroll Water Polo. Joey Yglesias said, “the teams certainly lived up to their motto during the 2014-15 season.”
