Southlake’s Special Olympics team competed at the state tournament over the summer, with a few even bringing home a gold medal or two.
Held at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, the 2024 Summer Games hosted thousands of athletes, coaches and family members to support their Special Olympic stars. This year marks the first time in 10 years that Southlake Carroll sent six athletes to the state contest.
Finishing first in the 100-meter dash, Chloe Capps also finished second in the softball event and sixth in the 4x100 relay. Meanwhile, Cristan Paredes shined in both of his events, finishing first in the shotput and second in the 100-meter dash. Dylanne Garcia finished first in the javelin throw and came fifth and sixth respectively in the 100-meter dash and 4x100 relay. Caroline McCaskill finished third in the softball throw while Clare Walker placed fifth in the 100-meter dash and Matt Hunter finished sixth in the 50-meter dash.
“They all worked so hard,” says Special Olympics coach Ashley Poteet. “We are so incredibly proud of our athletes and honored to have had this opportunity as their coaches.”
