From early-morning walkers to weekend tournament crowds, North Park is a steady hub of Southlake recreation — and it's headed for an $8.2 million improvement project.
Opened in 2012, the sprawling multi-purpose park features three lighted athletic fields, trails, a playground and open green space that serve residents year-round. Home to countless youth games, adult league matchups, practices and weekend tournaments, North Park has become one of the community's most heavily used recreational destinations.
Now, the City of Southlake has filed plans with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation outlining a major renovation project aimed at improving field conditions, infrastructure and the overall visitor experience.
According to project filings, renovations will include the replacement of approximately 24,000 square yards of athletic field turf and the installation of roughly 3,600 linear feet of chain-link fencing. Work is currently scheduled to begin in the fall.
But the improvements go far beyond turf and fences.
Plans also call for drainage upgrades, sidewalk improvements, paving of approximately 6,400 square yards of parking areas, irrigation enhancements designed to help cool and maintain the fields, expanded waste-management infrastructure and a conversion to energy-efficient LED lighting across the sports fields.
The result should be a park that's not only more attractive but also better equipped to handle the steady stream of athletes, spectators and families who rely on the facility throughout the year.
The improvements are part of a broader vision for North Park outlined in Southlake's Parks, Recreation & Open Space Comprehensive Plan. Future enhancements identified in the plan include additional parking, expanded trail connectivity with distance markers, a water bottle refill station, shade structures, public art installations and other park amenities. The plan also contemplates a potential fourth athletic field, though that element remains in the conceptual stage.
Several of those priorities — including parking improvements, trail connectivity and sports-field turf upgrades — have been identified as part of the North Park Athletic Fields Turf Conversion Phase 2 project.
The North Park project is one of more than $36.7 million in projects included in Southlake's Capital Improvement Program through September 2026. While residents may encounter some construction activity along the way, the long-term payoff promises upgraded amenities and improved functionality for one of the city's most active community spaces.
For the thousands of athletes, coaches, spectators and families who spend time at North Park each year, the message is simple: the fields may soon look a little greener, the lights a little brighter and the park experience a whole lot better.
