Carroll senior Caden Leonard added another historic chapter to his remarkable track career last Saturday, breaking the UIL 6A state meet record in the 3,200 meters with a winning time of 8:48.81.
The win was Leonard's seventh individual state title since he began his prep career.
Just two weeks after setting the Texas all-time best in the event at regionals, Leonard arrived in Austin facing one of the deepest distance fields ever assembled at the UIL State Championships. The race featured multiple sub-8:50 competitors, including Denton Guyer’s Ruel Newberry and El Paso Eastwood’s Noah Garcia, creating a championship showdown loaded with elite talent.
With just over a lap remaining, Leonard surged to the front and separated himself from the pack. His move proved decisive, and even while easing through the final straightaway, the Carroll star crossed the finish line in 8:48.81—breaking the previous UIL 6A state meet record of 8:49.10 and becoming the first runner in meet history to dip below 8:49 in the championship race.
Not to be outdone, senior Luna Gutierrez delivered her own milestone performance.
The Dragon standout placed third at the UIL State Meet, continuing a career defined by steady growth and championship-level consistency. Earlier this postseason, Gutierrez shaved 19 seconds off her personal best to move into sixth place on Carroll’s all-time list, and her podium finish at state further cemented her place among the program’s top distance runners.
Bound for the University of North Carolina, Leonard has turned his senior season into one of the most accomplished distance campaigns in Carroll history.
In the fall, Leonard became the first boys runner in UIL 6A history to win three consecutive state cross country championships, clocking a dominant 14:42 to lead Carroll to a team title. He followed that performance by earning his third straight Gatorade Texas Boys Cross Country Player of the Year honor and continued proving himself on the national stage with podium finishes against elite competition. On the track, Leonard spent the spring chasing the elusive four-minute mile, posting a 4:00.07 indoor personal best and multiple 4:01 performances against national-caliber fields before breaking the Texas all-time 3,200 record at regionals earlier this month.
