Carroll senior Caden Leonard is no stranger to the spotlight, but his latest accolade puts him among the nation’s most elite high school athletes.
Leonard has officially been named a Nike Elite Runner for 2025, joining a select group of just 40 prep athletes from across the United States recognized for their exceptional talent in track and field.
The Nike Elite Program, known for identifying and investing in the next generation of American track and field stars, chose only 20 male and 20 female athletes for this year’s roster. These athletes represent the very best across disciplines including sprints, hurdles, throws, jumps, middle distance and distance events, according to Nike.
For Leonard, a dominant force in Texas distance running, it’s yet another milestone in a high school career full of them.
Leonard has won four individual state titles during his time at Carroll: two consecutive UIL Class 6A boys cross country championships as a sophomore in 2023 and again in 2024, and two back-to-back state titles in track at the 2025 UIL Class 6A state meet. If you’re also counting team state titles, Leonard was a key contributor to Carroll’s UIL Class 6A cross country team championships in both 2023 and 2024. Upon graduating, he'll be attending the University of North Carolina to continue his track and field journey.
To top it off, he's been a Texas Gatorade National Player of the Year twice in a row.
With this new Nike distinction, Leonard won’t just be lacing up with the Swoosh—he’ll be receiving access to world-class resources, mentorship and development opportunities that could shape his post-high school future. The program is designed to nurture top-tier prep athletes, equipping them with the tools to succeed in collegiate competition and beyond, including potential spots on future Team USA national teams.
As Leonard enters his final year at Carroll, the recognition is not just a personal achievement—it’s a testament to the powerhouse program he represents and the high bar he continues to raise. And while his name now sits among the best in the country, for those who’ve followed his journey, it comes as no surprise.
