Carroll's baseball youth movement received postseason validation as two sophomore standouts earned all-district recognition, following a season that saw the Dragons overcome long odds to extend one of Texas' most impressive playoff streaks.
Shortstop Matthew Heredia was named District 4-6A Newcomer of the Year, while outfielder Cam Dean earned First Team All-District honors after helping lead Carroll to its 28th consecutive playoff appearance.
The honors are especially notable considering both players are only sophomores and were part of a young Dragons roster that regularly featured as many as eight sophomores in the lineup.
After opening district play with just one win in their first nine games, Carroll rallied behind its emerging underclassmen and closed the regular season on an eight-game winning streak to secure a postseason berth. The Dragons even won a playoff game, capping one of the program's most remarkable turnarounds in recent memory.
Dean and Heredia were central figures in that resurgence. Dean led the team with a .380 batting average, while Heredia hit .333 and provided steady play at shortstop throughout the season.
Head Coach Larry Vucan frequently praised the maturity and resilience of his young roster, which learned to navigate the challenges of varsity baseball while competing in one of the state's toughest districts.
With Heredia bringing home Newcomer of the Year honors and Dean earning a spot on the district's First Team, the future appears bright for a Dragons program that proved this spring it can win with youth. The 2026 season may have started with growing pains, but it ended with two sophomores among the district's very best.
